Moving Plates

Simulating a digital enviroment in a controlled setting

using Projection & LED technology

Academy Award Nominated technology - for filming beautiful scenes.

How we do it

The Footage:

We shoot the plates in one of our specialised rigs and vehicles, and stabilise and pre-grade the plates before bringing to set. We can also assist in the procurement of vintage plates, before processing and appropriately modifying them, accept footage given to us directly by your production - though in that case it is best for us to have a conversation in advance, to ensure the footage given to us will fit the needs of the shoot.

On Set:

The devil is in the details - that is why we combine the back projection image together with separate projections designed to appear in reflective surfaces (eg. windscreen) and our innovative reactive lighting system - synchronised with the background image, aimed at completely immersing the scene into reality. That means begone generic pre-set lighting effects!

On the day we run the projection via our onset playback system, which allows for image reposition, cutting, and grading to match camera - meaning we can immediately make any change you may need on the fly.

Post-Production:

There isn’t any - all done! No need to worry about the green screen, VFX, everything is already in the can.

Applications

Our set-up is very flexible - allowing us to raise our screens and projectors into the air in order to cover any angles needed - this process means that we can perform back projection to a huge variety of vehicles including (but not limited to):

  • Cars

  • Trains

  • Airplanes

  • Horse-drawn carriages

  • Buses

  • etc.

Scenic Projection

We also provide more traditional backdrop setups. Projection technology is now at a stage where we can provide a cost effective replacement to translites and green screens, with the advantage of being in-camera - allowing production to have faster turnaround, for a cheaper price.

Advantages

Unlike LEDs projection allows for a wide viewing angle - as the screen can be shot at a steep angle to the camera without any moire or colour bleed issues that the latter would incur. This means that once set the screen does not have to be re-positioned, or adjusted to match the camera angle, allowing for fast turn-arounds.

There is also almost no limit to the size of the screen, in fact we currently hold the World Record for biggest projection in a film, having provided 24 x 10 meter screen for BBC’s Dracula 2020 TV series - showing the vampire coming out of the ocean, greeted by armed soldiers in trucks and a helicopter, storming down the beach towards him.

Many actors despise green-screens, and find it difficult to deliver convincing performances in such a sterile enviroment - scenic projection allows us to bridge the gap between on-location realism and studio controlled convenience.

Process

Plates: We may shoot the background plates on your behalf, and supply them as part of the comprehensive package. Altenatively you may opt to provide the plates yourself, particularly if you intend to boost the plates with CGI - such as flying cars in the background of a sci-fi setting.

On-Set: We will position our screen & projector in advance before your shoot, we may also provide specialised reactive lighting synchorized to the plates if needed. On-set we are able to apply colour grading, re-framing, etc - to perfectly match the background plates to the camera.
